Courage in Learning: Overcoming Challenges as a Single Mother in Trade School

WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND BEFORE ATTENDING NIU COLLEGE?

I was pretty new to the whole idea of medical coding and billing. Before I started school, I worked as a financial advisor, helping people manage their retirement savings or save up for their kids' college. But I felt stuck like I needed a change.

HOW DID NIU COLLEGE AFFECT YOUR CAREER PATH?

A friend told me about NIU, so we both decided to give it a shot. Going to NIU was a great way for me to meet new people in a different field and learn something totally new. Right now, I'm working part-time as a financial advisor while also doing an internship in medical coding to get some experience and develop my resume before I fully switch over.

HOW DID MIA SHARE HELP YOU ON YOUR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY?

When I first applied to NIU, I talked to Dr. J about my money situation. I had just lost my job, and as a single mom, I needed to hang on to some of my savings. Dr. J told me about Mia Share, and getting that help with tuition was a real lifesaver. It meant I could start my classes and get my certifications without worrying too much about money. I was able to start my course immediately and received my certifications pretty quickly!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE PURSUING A TRADE SCHOOL EDUCATION?

I think getting more education is always a good investment. It's an experience that sticks with you and opens up new opportunities. I was scared to go back to school as a single mother in my forties. Admittedly, it was difficult and there were times that I struggled, especially in such a modern field, but once you start you get the courage to finish. At any age, it is important to keep learning and growing. You have to face new challenges head-on, you are stronger than you think!
