Step-by-Step Guide to Landing Your Dream Job

This overview will break down the job process step-by-step and offer our advice for tackling each step of the process.

1. Create and edit your important documents.

Employers and recruiters will typically require both a resumé and cover letter in addition to the job application. When you provide these documents, it is important that these are well-written, organized, and professional. For speciality jobs, you may be required to show certification and/or licensure. Be sure to have all of these important documents readily accessible to save time and make the job process easier for you.

2. Start searching for a job.

There are numerous online resources available for you to locate job postings. For students, it may be useful to reach out to your institution's Career Services center or locate their website. As you scan the internet for job postings, it might be helpful to use a spreadsheet to keep track of the jobs you want to apply for. It is very important to stay organized throughout this process. Pay close attention to specific dates listed on the job posting!

3. Do your research!

Before you apply to any job, you should learn as much about that employer as you can. This will give you information that you will need to decide if this is an employer, company, or organization for whom you would like to work. This will also help you demonstrate your knowledge and interest to the employer; the more information you have, the more prepared you will be for the application and interview.

3. Apply for the job

Once you have gathered all of your application materials, review your application entirely to ensure it is error-free and that you are marketing your knowledge and skills to the best of your ability. If you do not hear back from the job that you applied to, do not lose hope! Employers are busy and might not immediately contact desired applicants to schedule an interview.
